winter activities whidbey islandWinter Activities on Whidbey Island

The one drawback of living in such an amazing and beautiful placer as Whidbey Island is the long nights, and cloudy days of winter. This is what leads so many to leave the island for the winter season, and only return for the glorious summer days. If you’re like me, then you find a certain balance and poetry to the ebb and flow of the seasons on Whidbey Island. The stillness and peace of a rainy winter day leads you to appreciate the synergy and balance between the seasons. Still, sometimes it can be hard to find an engaging activity in the winter, that’s why I wrote this list of the best things to do on Whidbey during the winter season.

Enjoy a drink at a reputable establishment

If you’re like me, then you enjoy the occasional glass of wine, or craft beer. If you’re even more adventurous, you may like to try Whidbey Island’s own Loganberry Liqueur. We are lucky to have so many great wine tasting rooms, pubs, taprooms, breweries, and bars that offer some of the best beer, wine, cocktails, and liqueurs that you will have the pleasure to imbibe. The best part is that so many are made right here on Whidbey Island.

Here are our 5 favorite places to have a drink (Top 4 offer regular live music):

  • Bayview Taproom – Huge Selection of Craft Beers on Tap
  • Bloom’s Taste for Wine and Art – Fine Wines Made on Whidbey Island
  • Prima Bistro – Finely Crafted Signature Cocktails and Fine Wines by the Glass
  • Flyers Brewery – Craft Beers Brewed on Whidbey Island
  • The Terrace Wine Bar and Bistro – Huge Wine Selection and Knowledgeable Staff

Have a Nice Dinner or take a cooking class

Whidbey Island offers a cornucopia of food & wine pleasures, year round. No matter your taste, there is a fine establishment ready to offer you a great dining experience to liven up your Winter days and nights. If you want to improve your own culinary chops, check out the Orchard Kitchen. They offer amazing farmhouse dinners and cooking classes.

Enjoy Some Art

Often referred to as Puget Sound’s Largest Artist’s Colony, Whidbey is home to numerous working artists, writers, and performers. These include many well-known painters, sculptors, glass artists, wood workers, metal workers, mixed media artists, photographers, authors, poets, actors, and musicians. A great winter highlight is the First Saturday Langley Artwalk.

Downtown Langley’s First and Second Street are lined with art galleries, and the Langley Art Walk is the perfect way to find out what’s going on in each of them. The first Saturday of the month between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., each participating gallery opens their doors to showcase stunning works from local artists and regionally-produced art. There’s also refreshments and music and special surprises on hand.
